BIAE proved to be a great success for project Garuda in a number of ways. The decision to work on the new car as a crash project so as to bring it to a state where it could be displayed at the expo could well prove to be one of the most momentous in the short history of the project. As this is, in effect the team's blog as much as it is our website, perhaps a more detailed description of what the team now fondly remembers as 'those three days' is warranted.

The decision was precipitated by big JK. No two ways about that. In his maddeningly over confident way he suddenly proclaimed, " Let's finish the new car also, what is there ?", little considering that we had three days left and the first car had taken a few months to reach an equivalent level of completion. Certainly there were more than a few voices who claimed that statements like these only confirmed what they had long been saying about the big man's sanity. However, the idea was mooted in a desultory sort of way and the general consensus was to push forward and see what happens.

What did happen was a collective effort that perhaps lends some credibility to adidas' grandiose claim. The conditions were severe - the streets of shivajinagar are not like the customization workshops on 'pimp my ride'. Working there, sitting on the road from early in the morning to well past most regular bedtimes driven by an urgent goal the team was more focussed and driven than ever before. And late on day three, on the throes of exhaustion, there it was. It was ready. It was worth it.

The rest, as they say, is history. The expo went swimmingly. The team interacted with a multitude of interested and interesting individuals, many of whom offered suggestion and help in taking the project forward.

After a short sojourn to Bombay the team are all back in Bangalore and ready to take the next crucial step - Testing. More updates will follow.

Bengaluru International Auto Expo

Project Garuda RVCE Supermileage is proud to announce our participation in the Bengaluru International Auto Expo 2009. The expo is a huge event attracting participation from a multitude of big names from the auto industry. It is the biggest auto show in South India and brings together over 500 different brands under one roof. From Automobile Manufacturers, Automotive Component Manufacturers and the Automotive Market; BIAE is the base for the South Indian Automotive Industry to come together for innovation, showcase and growth of the industry.

We at project supermileage believe the expo affords us an excellent opportunity to showcase our technological achievements and innovations. It is also a great platform to interact with some of the prominent thinkers of the auto industry. Finally, the expo gives us the chance to get up close to some of the pathbreaking new ideas in the field. The experience is certain to be an enlightening one.

We would like to thank Winmedia communication pvt Ltd for giving us the opportunity to participate in this unique event. We will certainly work hard to ensure that it is a great success.

All major mechanical modification work on the engine is complete. While predictions on mileage at this stage would be hugely premature and speculative, suffice it to say that it makes all the right noises and is technically eons advanced from the old engine. The next step is to fit it with all it' s electronic components under the guidance of our friends at Race Dynamics.

Earlier this month 5 members of the team were accorded the rare privilege of a visit to General Electric's breathtaking John F Welsh Technology Center for a discussion on the project with some of the best minds from GE. The session was extremely insightful and the team gained a considerable amount of useful input. We hope and believe that this is the start of what will be a long and mutually benificial partnership with GE.

A prototype chassis has been built completely and is found to be lighter than the previous model and better able to sustain loads. However upon analysis it was found that the design could be further optimized and therfore a new and improved model of the chassis is in the pipeline. Efforts are also on to identify a lighter plate material.

Our heartfelt gratitude to CD Adapco for the CFD Training program conducted by them for 3 team members. The program was extremely enlightening and the knowledge gained can be put to good use in the project.

Finally, Project Garuda has been nominated for the 'Rotary Young Achiever's Award', the presentation is scheduled for the 29th of this month. Fingers crossed for that...

TO WORK, SCALLYWAGS !!

* Work on the 2008-09 car is now well underway. The engine modifications, i.e converting side valve to overhead, shifting position of camshaft, addition of a sleeve to reduce bore are at a fairly advanced stage and should be completed within the next few weeks. Anupam and Vinay are waiting to pounce on it and lug it off to their electronics hide-out to fit it with EFI, CDI and related paraphernalia.

* Rejoice ! Rejoice ! New SAE identity cards have finally arrived !

* Shreyas, JK and Deepak (in collaboration with too many tormented souls to enumerate) have worked a minor miracle with the chassis design and it is now firmly on the ansys workbench. With a little bit of luck we will be at the machinists with that by the 27th of november.

* Word on the street is that we may soon have a new workshop on college premises somewhere in the vicinity of the new tennis courts. If confirmed we can all (quite literally) heave a collective sigh of relief. (Without inhaling half a ton of dust)

* Rejoice! Rejoice ! Arjun 'cow' Rao is finally on the job ! Instumental in pushing the papers for the new workshop, a CFD course conducted by the wonderful people at CD Adapco was also set up by cow. Releasing next week, 'Cow doing shell design'!

* A visit to Pune has been arranged to follow up on the eco-marathon hydrogen engine by obtaining some expert advice.

* The search for further funding is still on.

GARUDA CONCEPT/IDEA

All members of RVCE Supermileage team have keen interest in automobiles. Spurred by the growing global concerns over oil-crisis, climate change, green technology and the likes, the team came out with a common vision to build a super fuel-efficient car.

The project not only gave us a chance to implement the concepts we had learned as theory, but also helped each one of us in unleashing the potential to innovate and find reasonable solutions to practical problems. The bridging of theoretical concepts with practical undertaking proved to be invaluable in reinforcing knowledge while teaching us to think out of the box. The many innovative solutions we were forced to uncover due to practical considerations have led us to mature our understanding and knowledge.

With an aim to represent our college and country in international events like the SAE Supermileage and the Shell Eco-Marathons, our goal as a team is also to help create awareness in India about the need to conserve our energy resources and to also illustrate the fact that technological development represents an important part of the solution to the problems that we face.

It is our desire that our work can produce ideas that can see utilization in the industry for the
purpose of improving vehicle performance. We also hope it will encourage and inspire others to also put their efforts into contributing to new technology.

We also hope that this paradigm spreads to other industries as well, inspiring the same
commitment to energy efficiency that is slowly developing in the Automotive sector.

Significance/Relevance of Project Garuda - RVCE Supermileage

We live in a world today where people are becoming increasingly aware of serious environmental problems that are threatening the fragile eco-system we depend on. The UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) report on global warming has brought to the fore the sort of problems being created by our current way of life. The cars we drive contribute a massive amount towards global warming and hence, progress in improving fuel economy of our vehicles is exactly what the doctor ordered.

RVCE Supermileage addresses the issues of fuel-efficiency and climate change on two levels:

1) Technological: Supermileage is a design study where the engineering students of RVCE have put their heads together to come up with new designs and technologies to revolutionize the way we live and the cars we drive. The technologies showcased here today maybe the concepts that drive your car tomorrow.

2) Awareness: We intend to participate in various International competitions like the SAE Supermileage, USA and the Shell Eco-Marathon, UK. Both of them are very high profile competitions, organized by the world's premier scientific and engineering bodies. These competitions are supported by major corporate names such as Shell, Michelin, Honeywell, Bosch, Chevron, Google, Nissan, Tap plastics etc. As a result, these competitions have helped make the public more aware of the fact that constructive solutions to the issue of climate change exist, via the means of new technologies.

Hence, RVCE Supermileage is a far-sighted endeavor, with massive social relevance today. The idea is that those who have worked on this project will take their skills, expertise and inspiration with them to the industry and help perpetuate a culture of social, scientific and technological responsibility.
